UN Human Rights Chief Warns of “Darkest Moment” in Gaza Conflict, Urges Global Action

Türk expressed grave concerns over Israeli policies that threaten to displace Palestinians from northern Gaza entirely, warning that these actions could amount to atrocity crimes, potentially extending to crimes against humanity. “We are facing what could amount to atrocity crimes,” he asserted.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has issued a stark warning about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the current situation as potentially the “darkest moment” of the ongoing conflict.

Speaking on Friday, Türk highlighted the severe conditions faced by civilians in northern Gaza, where relentless bombing and a blockade have left many at risk of starvation and forced to choose between fleeing violence or remaining trapped in a war zone.

“The bombing in North Gaza is non-stop,” Türk stated, emphasizing the dire circumstances as the Israeli military has ordered mass evacuations without guaranteeing safe passage or the possibility of return.

He noted that civilians attempting to escape have faced violence, including reports of being shot at. “The Israeli military is separating families and detaining many people,” he added.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights pointed out that humanitarian access to northern Gaza has been severely restricted, with little aid reaching those in need for weeks. “Many are now facing starvation,” he warned, stressing that hospitals have also come under attack, resulting in casualties among both staff and patients.

With over 150,000 people reported as killed, wounded, or missing, Türk cautioned that the scale and intensity of military operations could lead to even higher casualties. “My gravest fear is… that number will rise dramatically,” he said.

He reiterated the obligations of states under international law, specifically referencing the Geneva Conventions, which mandate protection for civilians during armed conflict. “Under the Geneva Conventions, States have an obligation to act when a serious violation of international humanitarian law has been committed,”

Türk emphasized. He called on global leaders to prioritize humanitarian law and civilian protection, stating, “I implore you to put the protection of civilians and human rights first.”

Türk stated with a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility of nations: “Now, the international rule of law is being progressively dismantled… Either the world fails those who desperately need help, or we stand united and put a stop to this.”
