The situation in Gaza has reached alarming levels, with a devastating impact on the civilian population, particularly among the most vulnerable: children.

In a strong statement, representatives from humanitarian organizations and the UN have denounced that the indiscriminate attacks by Israel are not only disproportionate but also constitute a deliberate assault on civilians, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian crisis.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), has noted that a large amount of minors in Gaza have suffered amputations due to severe injuries caused by Israeli bombings, “many of whom have lost limbs and undergo surgeries without even anesthesia”. He also mentioned that Gaza has the highest number of disabled children per capita in the world.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has also expressed its alarm. A spokesperson for the organization indicated that many children in Gaza suffer from serious illnesses such as traumatic brain injuries, amputations, burns, cancer, and severe malnutrition.

Despite the capacity to evacuate several infants, only one child manages to leave the enclave each day. In this regard, the entity commented, “Trapped in the clutches of an indifferent bureaucracy, the suffering of the children is brutally exacerbated,” emphasizing the urgent need for an effective humanitarian response.

In light of this situation, UNICEF has described the Gaza Strip as “a cemetery and a slaughterhouse for children,” due to the devastating impact of Israeli attacks on the child population. Children are often the primary victims of bombings, incursions, and direct gunfire, raising serious concerns about the future of an entire generation.

Prior to the escalation of the conflict in October 2023, it was already reported that one in five families had at least one disabled person, with children prominently featured in this statistic. Now, a harshly exacerbated reality is unfolding, where children are at the center of barbarity.

Humanitarian organizations are urgently calling for action to protect the children of Gaza and ensure their access to medical care and psychological support. The situation is critical and requires an immediate response to safeguard the rights and lives of the most vulnerable in this heartbreaking conflict.
