UN Supports Mission to Intervene in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The initiative for the resolution came from Sierra Leone and France.

The Security Council authorized a resolution empowering the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) to support the Southern African Development Community Mission (SAMIDRC).

This measure is intended to improve coordination, sharing information and providing technical assistance.

“The draft resolution also seeks to create an enabling environment for the implementation of ongoing regional peace efforts, including acceptance of the recent ceasefire agreement negotiated by Angola between the Governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda”, said the Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, Michael Imran Kanu.

Whereas the Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Nathalie Estival-Broadhurst, stated that «the United Nations mission is prepared to provide technical support for the protection of civilians and can provide logistical assistance for medical evacuations, as well as sharing information”.

According to the senior official, this represents a crucial step in strengthening international initiatives to combat violence in the east of the African nation.

The «A3 plus one» coalition, which includes Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Guyana, has also shown its support for the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC).
