The United Nations (UN) warned on Monday that approximately 5.98 million people will require humanitarian assistance in Somalia during 2025 due to insecurity and climate-related phenomena.

Although this figure is lower than the 6.9 million reported in 2024, the organization estimates that around 3.5 million people remain displaced from their homes in this Horn of Africa nation. The UN noted that while it did not conduct an in-depth analysis of the environmental situation, the increasing frequency of droughts and cyclical floods is testing the “resilience of millions of Somalis.”
As a result, the country continues to face multiple crises, including climate emergencies, prolonged conflicts, displacement, rampant disease outbreaks, and widespread poverty.
The agency pointed out that “while the humanitarian situation in Somalia has improved slightly compared to previous years, insecurity generated by conflict has become the primary cause of internal displacement.”
“Sustained humanitarian assistance is essential to save lives in Somalia, but it must be accompanied by investments in long-term solutions to break the cycle of vulnerability,” the organization emphasized.
The UN also stated that the Horn of Africa experienced its worst drought in four decades between 2020 and 2023, leading to 6.6 million people in Somalia facing acute food insecurity.
