In a context of growing tension and violence, Geir O. Pedersen, the United Nations special envoy for Syria, has issued a grave warning about the current situation in the country, urging the parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict that has been ravaging Syria for nearly 14 years.
In a statement released on Sunday, Pedersen highlighted the recent advances of the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, considered a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council, which have drastically altered the combat fronts on Syrian territory.
This escalation of hostilities not only puts the lives of thousands of civilians at risk but also has profound implications for peace and security in the region and beyond.
The envoy stressed the urgency for all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, emphasizing that “the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure must be an immediate priority.”
His call is addressed to all actors involved in the conflict, reminding them that mere management of the conflict is not enough and that no faction can solve this crisis through military means.
“The risks of escalation are imminent,” warned Pedersen, who has repeatedly urged serious and meaningful engagement in negotiations leading to a lasting resolution of the conflict.
Without a clear political approach, Syria’s future is bleak, with the country facing the danger of further division and destruction. Pedersen stressed the need to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 2254, adopted in 2015, which sets out a framework for an inclusive political process. “Without an urgent political commitment, we risk more bloodshed,” he concluded.
The UN reiterates its call for action and unity to end this humanitarian crisis and achieve a sustainable solution.
