UNESCO representatives voted unanimously in favour of the Lebanese request, despite the fact that the Israeli commission tried to dismiss the proposal for protection of monuments.
At a session held on Tuesday at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Lebanon defended the proposal to protect 34 monuments from damage caused by Israeli aggression.

After the action, the Minister of Culture issued a statement congratulating his people on this significant achievement, considered as a «slap in the face» and a victory for international rights and regulations.
The Culture Portfolio also thanked all the representatives of Beirut to UNESCO, the ambassador, Mustafa Adeeb, as well as the media covering the session.
The escalation of Zionist aggression against Lebanon has caused human and material damage to sites of great historical and cultural importance such as the localities of Tyre, Nabatieh and Baalbek.
The citadel of Baalbek in particular has been attacked by Israelis. One of the most devastating was that against the southern entrance, which damaged the dome of Duris, built during the Ayyubid era. According to archaeologists and cultural authorities in Lebanon, the aggression caused cracks in the structure.
Similarly, the blast waves of the detonations and impact of missiles damaged the Gouraud wall, which lost approximately 30 metres of wall.
