The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has described the situation in Gaza as dire, highlighting the lack of safe places for residents to shelter from the ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
According to the organization, over one million children are at severe risk, not only due to the bombings but also because of the lack of essential resources and the collapse of basic infrastructure. This has displaced approximately 1.9 million people, nearly half of whom are children, now forced to live in improvised shelters where they face elevated risks of disease. UNICEF emphasized that “there is no safe place in Gaza” under these conditions.
On social media, UNICEF stated: “One million children in Gaza are struggling to survive without basic necessities. Hundreds of thousands are without clean water or sanitation,” especially after Israel cut electricity to the region a week ago.
The organization also warned of significant mental health risks for children in Gaza, including post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, resulting from constant exposure to violence, the loss of family members, repeated displacement, and a lack of basic healthcare.
UNICEF has called on all parties to immediately restore the ceasefire and urged influential nations to ensure the situation does not worsen. The organization reiterated the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law to enable the provision of urgent aid, protect civilians, and facilitate the release of all hostages.
Since March 18, Israel has resumed airstrikes in Gaza, violating the ceasefire established in January. These actions have also included ground operations in central and northern parts of the enclave, drawing international condemnation and calls to reinstate the truce.
