“We, the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom welcome the Arab initiative of a Recovery and Reconstruction Plan for Gaza,” reads the statement from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

The Office, head by the MP David Lammy, says the Arab plan shows a realistic path to the reconstruction of Gaza and promises “– if implemented – swift and sustainable improvement of the catastrophic living conditions for the Palestinians living in Gaza.”

The statement added that reconstruction efforts must be based on a political and security framework, acceptable to both Israelis and Palestinians.

In addition, the text stresses that the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas should not govern Gaza, despite having been elected to govern the Strip, nor remain a “threat to Israel” and that the central role of the Palestinian Authority is important.

The four countries are committed to working with the Arab initiative, the Palestinians and Israel to address these issues together, including security and governance.

According to an Egyptian plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, devastated by the war started by Israel in October 2023 after the Hamas attack on Israeli soil, it stipulates that the enclave will be rehabilitated in more than five years and that 53,000 million dollars will be needed.

The proposal was approved at a recent summit of Arab countries who met to express their rejection of US President Donald Trump’s plan to displace the inhabitants of Gaza and design an alternative.
