The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has issued a strong statement on the recent Israeli air attacks in Yemen, calling them “alarming.”

In the statement released, Guterres made an urgent call for respect for international law and humanitarian law, which require the protection of civilians and essential infrastructure in conflict situations.

This came in the context of the attacks that have hit Sana’a International Airport, where a member of the UN Humanitarian Air Service crew was injured, among the seaport of Hodeidah, and the Haziz power plant.

These attacks have raised concerns not only about the immediate impact on civilians but also about the implications for humanitarian assistance in a region already ravaged by years of conflict.

At the time, the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was also on site and had arrived in Yemen on a humanitarian mission.

Guterres stressed that “humanitarian relief personnel should not be the target of attacks and must be respected and protected at all times,” echoing growing concern for the safety of humanitarian workers in conflict zones.

The Secretary-General also expressed his alarm at the possibility of an escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, urging all parties to cease military actions and exercise maximum restraint.

This call for calm and respect for international law reflects the growing tension in the region and the urgent need to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers amid a conflict that has caused untold human suffering.
