The White House has confirmed that “ongoing conversations and discussions” are taking place with the Islamist group Hamas, marking a historic milestone as the United States has never directly engaged with this organization before. These talks focus on the release of American hostages, a matter overseen by Boehler, the special envoy for these issues.

Hamas, for its part, has acknowledged that it has held direct discussions with Boehler in recent days regarding a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Although the Palestinian group rejected a U.S. proposal to extend the first phase of the agreement until the end of Ramadan in exchange for the release of additional hostages, negotiations continue.

A leader of the Palestinian Resistance commented that the meeting between the United States and Hamas was requested by the Americans and surprised the Israelis. According to this leader, the U.S. envoy left the meeting with a positive impression of Hamas, suggesting that it is possible to negotiate with the movement.

However, it is important to note that the envoy only focused on the exchange of prisoners and did not address issues related to a ceasefire or ending the war. While no specific formula for the exchange was presented, the U.S. side listened attentively to Hamas’s perspective, which could open new avenues for future negotiations.
