Guantánamo is rising after the devastating passage of Hurricane Oscar, an event that has left deep scars in the province and its surroundings. The community’s response has been strong, uniting efforts in a powerful act of solidarity and reconstruction. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez reaffirmed the government’s commitment by stating, “You are not alone or abandoned. Cuba is here for you.”

The Revolutionary Armed Forces have established an air bridge to deliver food to Imías, one of the most affected areas, where land routes have become impassable due to flooding.

This effort is part of a broader mobilization that includes sending trucks with donations from other provinces, such as the first convoy that departed for Guantánamo with urgent aid.

Additionally, Cuban youth have eagerly responded to the call for help. Meyvis Estévez Echeverría, first secretary of the National Committee of the Union of Young Communists (UJC), highlighted that over 600 young people from across the country have signed up to join brigades supporting recovery in the municipalities hardest hit by the hurricane. “With backpacks on our shoulders, ready to work… Our youth understand that the homeland needs us,” affirmed Estévez Echeverría, emphasizing the prevailing spirit of solidarity among Cuban youth.

On another note, Yosvany Pupo Otero, first deputy minister of the Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN), stressed the importance of ensuring resources and coordinating with municipal Defense Councils to guarantee efficient distribution of aid.

The community is currently in a state of alarm, but optimism and determination are palpable as Guantanameros prepare to repair the damage caused. Unity and collective effort are evident in Guantánamo, where every action counts on the path to recovery following Hurricane Oscar.
