University Professors in Argentina Go on Strike This Monday for Wage Claim

The unions representing university professors in Argentina confirmed on Saturday that they will strike next Monday after the failure of wage negotiations in their sector.

This Friday there was a meeting between government officials and union representatives of university teachers and non-university teachers the representatives received the offer of an increase of 3% for August and 2% for September.

The reference value is taken from the general pattern of the state. They then rejected the proposal and confirmed the unemployment announcement they had made last Tuesday.

The 72-hour teacher strike at public universities was ratified CONADU (@PrensaCONADU) confirmed the national strike for August 12, 13 and 14, in rejection of the new imposition of salary increases. In the meeting held with national universities, unions and representatives of #CIN , the Government offered a 3% increase in August and 2% for September, which was rejected by the university community.

The National Federation of University Teachers (CONADU) decided to strike for 72 hours, from Monday to Wednesday, when classes must be resumed after the break of the southern winter, In protest at the wage adjustment proposed by the Argentine government, which teachers consider insufficient in the context of high inflation.

“Once again the Government is demonstrating that it intends to destroy the public university, impoverishing its workers. In the face of this provocation, there is no other response than deepening the plan of struggle, organization and mobilization,” said Yamile Socolovsky, CONADU’s secretary for international relations.

The wage dispute is taking place against a background of severe cuts in public funding for education, as part of the severe adjustment plan launched last December by the Executive of Javier Milei to restore balance to public accounts in Argentina.

In this context, the National Interuniversity Council (CIN), which brings together the rectors of the houses of high studies in Argentina, expressed concern about the salary situation faced by workers in the public university system.
