The United Nations (UN) has denounced the looting of a humanitarian convoy in Gaza and warned of an imminent food crisis. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reported that a convoy of 109 trucks carrying aid was violently looted, with only the cargo from 12 trucks reaching its destination intact.

This incident occurred near Karim Abu Salem after the Israeli military unexpectedly altered the convoy’s schedule and route, forcing it onto an unfamiliar path, as explained by UNRWA’s Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric.

Dujarric stated that 98 trucks were lost, and their drivers were compelled to unload supplies under threats. UNRWA held Israel, as the occupying power, responsible for failing to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid, which constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.

“Without immediate intervention, the severe food shortages will worsen, endangering the lives of over two million people who rely on this assistance to survive,” the organization cautioned.

Additionally, Dujarric noted that only eleven trucks managed to reach a warehouse for aid distribution, while the remaining 98 are beyond the control of humanitarian agencies, with a significant amount of food missing.

UNRWA also reported that at least eight bakeries in Deir al Balah and Khan Yunis have been operating at minimal capacity for weeks, with others forced to close due to a “severe flour shortage.” The international community faces an urgent challenge to address this humanitarian crisis before it escalates further.
