This Thursday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reiterated its determination to continue providing humanitarian assistance in the occupied Palestinian territories, despite the enactment of two Israeli laws that prohibit its operations.

UNRWA assured that it will maintain its presence in the Shuafat refugee camp and in East Jerusalem, as it has not yet received “any official communication” on how the new provisions approved by the Israeli Parliament will be implemented.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the UN agency emphasized its commitment to continue supporting Palestinian communities: “UNRWA continues to provide assistance and services to the communities we serve. Our clinics in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, remain open as humanitarian operations in Gaza continue. We are committed to staying and delivering services.”

The approval of these two laws, which came into effect this Thursday, is seen by many as a further attempt by the Israeli government to weaken UNRWA and limit its ability to provide vital aid to the Palestinian people.

These measures are part of a broader campaign aimed at restricting the agency’s work, which has been a cornerstone of assistance to Palestinian refugees for decades.

Established in 1949, UNRWA provides essential services such as education, healthcare, and social support to millions of Palestinian refugees in the region. Its work has been crucial amid the prolonged conflict and Israeli occupation, which have left thousands of families in extreme vulnerability.

Despite the legal and political challenges, the agency has made it clear that it will not abandon its humanitarian mission.

The international community continues to closely monitor the situation, while human rights organizations have expressed concern about the potential impact of these laws on the Palestinian population, already affected by decades of conflict and occupation.
