Uruguay: Police Raid Montevideo Neighborhood, 21 People Arrested

On Wednesday, some 20 people were arrested following police raids in the Cerro Norte neighborhood of the Uruguayan capital, the scene of violence between two criminal gangs.

The prosecutor of Flagrancia Rodrigo Morosoli has 21 prisoners for prosecution. Five people have been convicted for the clashes that took place in the town.

A minor was sentenced to 16 months in the National Institute for Adolescent Social Inclusion (Inisa).
A few days ago, people in police uniform murdered a man in his home in Cerro Norte.
The Ministry of the Interior organized a crackdown in that neighborhood with about 40 raids and the seizure of firearms and drugs.
There have been several murders there in recent days, which the authorities attribute to the dispute between two gangs formed by criminal groups that the police have dismantled in recent months.
According to the newspaper El Observador, the police are also intervening in the neighborhoods of Marconiy Boix and Merino.
Following police operations, the Cruz de Carrasco, Casavalle, Villa Española and La Chancha neighborhoods, all in the capital, which recently inaugurated a homicide squad, are under control.
