On Sunday, citizens will be able to participate in the primary elections” through which the Uruguayan parties will choose their next presidential candidates from the most voted pre-candidates. However, citizen participation is not mandatory.

So far, authorities have registered 30 pre-candidates competing within 18 parties. Unlike previous occasions, the primary elections on June 30 are characterized by the presence of five female pre-candidates who are competing to be the presidential candidates of Uruguay’s three main political forces.

Carolina Cosse, Laura Raffo, Roxana Corbran, Carolina Ache Batlle, and Zaida Gonzalez are politicians who hope to govern the country from March 1, 2025.

The text reads, “Pepe Mujica dancing at the final rally before the Broad Front internal elections. For those worried about his health, here is the answer from this old tupamaro.”

Although the polls do not predict any of them as winners in the primaries, their presence sets a record for female candidacies. Despite Uruguay being one of the most advanced Latin American countries in terms of gender equality, the participation of women in positions of political positions has been rather limited.

In the left-wing coalition Broad Front, Yamandu Orsi is the pre-candidate who has managed to capture 58 percent of the electoral preferences, far surpassing pre-candidate Carolina Cosse.

In the ruling National Party, Laura Raffo has 20 percent of the support compared to the 66 percent achieved by Alvaro Delgado. In the historic Colorado Party, Andres Ojeda has achieved 39 percent of the voting intentions, while Carolina Ache has barely reached 4 percent.
