U.S. citizens go to the polls today, November 5, however final results will be released once Congress certifies the Electoral College votes by January 6, 2025.

The president in the U.S. electoral process is not elected by direct popular vote, but by the subsequent vote of electors who are part of the process called the Electoral College.
Electoral College Votes
The Electoral College is composed of 538 electors who will cast their votes on December 18, 2024.
Finally, Congress will count and certify these votes on January 6, 2025. The inauguration of the new president is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
Each state has a number of electors proportional to its population, and the candidate who obtains at least 270 Electoral College votes will be the next president.
Voting closes this Tuesday, however, the results released on election night are provisional. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the final tally includes a series of steps that take place over a period of weeks, with security measures in place to protect the integrity of the process.
The process in the U.S. varies from state to state and even county to county. It includes the handling of in-person, mail and absentee ballots, each with specific regulations.
Paperwork reviews and certifications are also handled differently from state to state, with deadlines varying from mid-November to the end of November.
