US Stance on Venezuela Elections is Reckless: President AMLO

Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil will remain in permanent contact to observe how the Venezuelan situation evolves.

On Friday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday said the recent U.S. position on Venezuela’s elections was “reckless” and renewed his call for the international community to avoid interventionism.

In his daily press conference, the Mexican president said that statements like the one made by the United States on Thursday do not help resolve electoral disputes in Venezuela.

“With all due respect, it doesn’t help. It is reckless,” Lopez Obrador said when asked by a journalist whether the statement from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken could worsen the situation in the South American country.

AMLO also mentioned that the foreign affairs ministries of Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil will remain in permanent contact to observe how the situation in Venezuela evolves.

“Through this contact, they will make proposals to the presidents to help in any way we can, thinking about going beyond partisan, political and ideological differences, and putting the interest of the Venezuelan people first,” Lopez Obrador pointed out, and reiterated his call for “no interventionism” from the international community and multilateral organizations,

Previously, on Thursday, Blinken claimed that far-right opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez received the most votes in the July 28 elections.

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, however, declared Nicolas Maduro as the president-elect on Monday for the 2025-2031 term, following the elections held on July 28.
