Venezuela’s Public Ministry Ratifies International Law Respect in González Urrutia Case

The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab spoke this Sunday after the departure to Spain of former opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, and he ratified the absolute respect for the decision of the head of state Nicolás Maduro to grant the corresponding safe-conduct.

On Saturday night, former candidate Edmundo González left Venezuela for Spain on a plane of the Spanish air forces, after receiving the corresponding permits. The information was confirmed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

Tarek read a statement stating that the entity he runs “Expresses its absolute respect for the decisions of the Venezuelan Executive to grant safe passage in compliance with the right to asylum guaranteed by article 69 of the Constitution of the Republic.”

The prosecutor said that the Public Ministry “had first hand knowledge of the exact moment when citizen Edmundo González Urrutia entered the embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas.”

William Saab said the they were informed by the Venezuelan authorities of the asylum application made by Gonzalez Urrutia, “in the framework of international human rights law and diplomatic relations between States.”

The document read by the Attorney General also stated that the governments of Spain and Venezuela agreed to grant a safe-conduct to Edmundo González so that he could leave the country and claim asylum granted by that European country.

“This Public Prosecutor’s Office has maintained the close communication established during the last few days with the judicial representative of González Urrutia, lawyer José Vicente Haro, for the purposes of the case that investigates this firm,” said the statement.

The Venezuelan attorney general said that on September 4, Former candidate González Urrutia recognized William Saab as Attorney General of the Republic and the powers of the Public Ministry based on the Constitution and the Law and that the institution played an important role in receiving the judicial representative of Edmundo González at the headquarters of the institution.
