Through a post on his social networks, the day before, the Venezuelan chancellor Yván Gil evoked the 125 years of the Paris Arbitration Award, signed on October 3, 1899, which formalized the dispossession of that region, represented in the eighth star of the Venezuelan flag.

Gil stated that the Paris Arbitration Award of 3 October 1899 represents an open wound in our territorial sovereignty. This ruling, made in the context of pacts between colonial powers, robbed our country of the rich and strategic region of Esequibo, a territory that has historically been part of our identity and culture.

In the opinion of the Venezuelan Chancellor, the unjust and illegal award, signed by one party by the USA. representing Venezuela and the United Kingdom, «not only violated our territorial rights, but also highlighted the inequalities of the colonial system of the time, whose injustices have had sequels to the present day».

He stressed that Venezuela will not give up on its just claim over this region, as it did during the referendum of 3 December 2023.

The Venezuelan diplomat said that the Esequibo cause has become a «symbol of resistance and desire to recover what rightfully belongs to us».

Venezuela strongly opposed the Paris Arbitration Award on the grounds that there were vices of nullity in the decision to grant the United Kingdom administration and occupation of that region.

The Geneva Agreement, signed in February 1966, was the fruit of Caracas’ long struggle to claim Guayana Esequiba and to reveal the historical truth on this issue.

This recognizes the safeguarding of Venezuelan sovereignty rights over that area, but the Cooperative Republic of Guyana (formerly a colony of the United Kingdom) is opposed to returning to the negotiating table in order to find a political solution, peaceful, honourable and mutually supportive as the Agreement states.
