Venezuela Calls for Avoiding Foreign Interference in Syria

The South American nation also urged the international community to help eradicate violence and terrorism.
On Monday, Venezuela advocated for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Syria, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government and the rise to power of Islamist forces.

The government of President Nicolas Maduro expressed hope that the Syrian people “can find a path toward a peaceful resolution of their differences, without external interference or the use of violence as a mechanism to address political conflicts.”
Venezuela reiterated its commitment to preserving the territorial unity of Syria, to defending its sovereignty and independence, and to fully respecting the values enshrined in the United Nations Charter, with special emphasis on safeguarding the civil, political and human rights of all its population without any discrimination.
The Maduro administration also reaffirmed its “solidarity with the Syrian people during this crucial moment” and urged the international community to promote solutions that “contribute to peace, eradicate violence and terrorism, and build pathways for comprehensive development” in the Arab nation.
On Sunday, groups led by the terrorist organization Levant Liberation Committee (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, HTS) took control of Damascus with minimal resistance after just 12 days of offensive operations.
The following day, the Syrian Embassy in Russia confirmed that the deposed president is in Moscow, where he is reported to have received asylum along with his family.
Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the Islamist leader whose militant origins trace back to the al-Nusra Front, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, proclaimed his victory in a statement. He called on his followers to remain calm and avoid abuses in areas under their control, continuing the stance he has taken since the start of the offensive, which has ushered in a new geopolitical paradigm across the Middle East.
