The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has expressed its solidarity and joined Namibia in national mourning following the passing of Sam Nujoma, an iconic leader in the struggle for the African nation’s independence.
In an official statement signed by President Nicolás Maduro, the importance of Nujoma in Namibia’s history and his pivotal role in the fight against German colonialism and South African apartheid oppression were highlighted.
Sam Nujoma, who became Namibia’s first democratic president in 1990, passed away at the age of 95 in Windhoek, the Namibian capital. The announcement was made by Namibia’s current president, Nangolo Mbumba, who reported that Nujoma had been hospitalized for the past three weeks due to health issues. Despite medical efforts, Namibia’s “bravest son” did not recover.
The Venezuelan government’s statement emphasized that “his legacy will endure eternally in history,” underscoring the principles of freedom, equality, and justice that Nujoma promoted during his tenure. Additionally, it recalled his life dedicated to serving the Namibian people and his role as the “founding father” of the nation.
