The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has expressed its solidarity and joined Namibia in national mourning following the passing of Sam Nujoma, an iconic leader in the struggle for the African nation’s independence.

In an official statement signed by President Nicolás Maduro, the importance of Nujoma in Namibia’s history and his pivotal role in the fight against German colonialism and South African apartheid oppression were highlighted.

Sam Nujoma, who became Namibia’s first democratic president in 1990, passed away at the age of 95 in Windhoek, the Namibian capital.
