“The Venezuelan government joins the commemoration of Argentina’s National Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice, remembering the victims of the last military dictatorship, which took place between 1976 and 1983,” he said.

“On this day, we pay tribute to and acknowledge the thousands of disappeared, tortured, and murdered individuals, as well as their families, who continue their tireless struggle for truth and justice in the face of the fascist far-right’s attempts to erase historical memory. The truth of the people will always prevail!” the Venezuelan diplomat added.

On Monday afternoon, Argentine progressive political parties, labor unions, and human rights organizations such as the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Mayo Square, H.I.J.O.S., and the “Memory, Truth and Justice” Meeting will march in Buenos Aires to remember the victims of the dictatorship.

The text reads, “On March 24, 1976, Operation Condor unleashed hell and torture, murders, and disappearances began. Three years earlier, however, the fascist military had staged a coup, and many Uruguayans found refuge in Argentina. Dictatorships in Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile.”

Besides demanding justice for the 30,000 disappeared, Argentines will also reject far-right President Javier Milei’s exclusionary policies, historical denialism, and hate speech. Among these policies are the dismantling of institutions meant to uphold rights, the criminalization of social protest, repression of retirees, indiscriminate reduction of the State, and the signing of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The National Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice is a public holiday that commemorates the victims of the military dictatorship, which established a brutal regime known as the “National Reorganization Process” on March 24, 1976, when the military overthrew President Isabel Peron.

From 1976 to 1983, the regime carried out widespread human rights violations, including forced disappearances, torture, and killings. It is estimated that around 30,000 people were forcibly disappeared (desaparecidos), many of whom were political opponents, activists, students, and journalists.

Each year, March 24 serves to honor the memory of the victims and promote awareness about human rights. The day is marked by marches, events, and educational activities organized by human rights organizations, including the Mayo Square’s Mothers and Grandmothers.

People demand justice for the crimes committed during the dictatorship and reaffirm the importance of “Never Again,” a phrase symbolizing the commitment to preventing future human rights abuses.

Established as an official holiday in 2002, this day is a key part of Argentina’s ongoing efforts to confront its past, ensure accountability, and uphold democracy and human rights.
