On Monday, Venezuelan Defense Minister Gen. Vladimir Padrino Lopez held a press conference to reject the destabilizing intentions of former presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.

The previous night, this far-right politician addressed the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), tacitly seeking their support to prevent the inauguration of President Nicolas Maduro on January 10. Below is the statement from Defense Minister Padrino Lopez:

“We have witnessed with deep indignation a video published on the night of Sunday, January 5, by the coward Edmundo Gonzalez, shamelessly and insolently addressing the Bolivarian National Armed Forces. His absurd and incoherent statements demonstrate not only ignorance regarding the institution but also an exacerbated desperation in the face of the imminent and resounding failure of his coup plans.

The laughable video was released precisely as he arrived in the United States, whose government sponsors and manipulates the Venezuelan far-right. This serves as a smokescreen to hide their cowardice and weakness, as they lack popular support and even less respect from the military institution, which they have repeatedly insulted and belittled.

With his characteristic cynicism, using improper language and with a circus-like demeanor, Gonzalez speaks of the peace, stability, and well-being of Venezuelans, while systematically advocating for economic sanctions and all kinds of unilateral coercive measures.

These sanctions have caused significant harm to the Venezuelan people, including military personnel and their families, who have been the first and most numerous victims of the violence fomented over the years as part of their neo-fascist actions to destabilize the country’s legitimate government and undermine their fellow citizens’ peace.

We categorically and vehemently reject this clownish and despicable act of politicking, which will have no impact on the FANB’s strong patriotic conscience. In perfect civilian-military-police unity, the FANB will staunchly defend the Constitution and the nation’s laws, as well as its freedom, sovereignty, and independence.

Let the entire world know! On January 10, 2025, we will reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Venezuelan democracy and recognize Nicolas Maduro as the Constitutional President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, reelected for the 2025–2031 term. We will solemnly pledge loyalty, obedience, and subordination to our Commander-in-Chief.

We are the children of the United Liberator Army. Do not misjudge us. For Bolivar and Chavez, we shall prevail! Chavez lives! The homeland continues! Independence and Socialist homeland! We shall live and triumph! The Sun of Venezuela rises in the Essequibo! Independence or Nothing! Always Loyal, Never Traitors!”
