This review seeks to consolidate the institutional commitment to peace, justice, and human rights, said Saab.

On Friday, Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced that his office has requested that the courts review the cases of 225 citizens detained during the episodes of right-wing violence that took place after the presidential elections on July 28.

“We have requested 225 reviews of measures for those prosecuted for the events that shocked the country and left a regrettable figure of 28 citizens dead, nearly 200 people injured, and 500 public and private assets destroyed,” he said in a press conference.

Previously, through a statement, Saab announced that, “after exhaustive investigations based on new clues and evidence,” the Attorney General’s Office coordinated actions with the Judiciary to carry out those reviews.

This review process proceeded in accordance with the provisions of Article 285 of the Constitution of the Republic, the Attorney General’s Office also pointed out.

As a result of these investigations, the Prosecutor’s Office requested a review of the measures applied to the defendants, “considering that Venezuela is based on higher values such as life, justice and human rights, as well as due process enshrined in article 49 of the Magna Carta, highlighting the right to defense, the presumption of innocence and trial by natural judges.”

The review requested by the Prosecutor’s Office seeks to facilitate the reunification of the accused with their families and to consolidate the commitment of the Venezuelan institutions to peace, justice, and human rights, Saab pointed out.

Initially, some 2,400 people were imprisoned for being related to acts of violence that occurred between July 29 and 30, according to official information. During those days, Venezuelan “authorities arrested people who sought to promote chaos, anxiety, and terror in the country,” Saab recalled and denounced that the leaders of the far-right organizations that promoted the incidents fled abroad.

“We will continue to review the cases that merit review,” the Attorney General said, warning that “those who have been responsible for violent actions will be punished.”
