Far Right Former Presidential Candidate Edmundo González Leaves Venezuela Voluntarily

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry reported this Saturday night that the former far-right presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia has left the country voluntarily and traveled to Spain.

“Opposition citizen Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who has been a voluntary refugee in the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas for several days, has left the country and requested political asylum from that government,” reads a statement released by the Ministry.

The document recalls that in this regard, “once the pertinent contacts between both governments had taken place, the facts of the case had been met and in compliance with international legality.”

It also highlights that Venezuela has granted the due safe-conducts for the sake of the tranquility and political peace of the country.

“This conduct reaffirms the respect for the law that has prevailed in the actions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international community” says the document, at the time that make clear that they will continue informing in the following hours.

In addition, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Urrutia “has taken off from Caracas heading to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane.”
