‘To defend the homeland of Palestine, you must love it,’ Commander Chavez once said.

On Thursday, residents of the 23 de Enero parish inaugurated a square in homage to Palestine in Caracas, where they condemned the genocide that these people are suffering due to the offensive launched by Israeli occupation forces against Gaza in October 2023.

“We stand in solidarity with the Palestineans, who are organizing to withstand the onslaught of these genocidal Israeli forces that are supported by NATO, the French, and the U.S.,” said the leader of the La Piedrita collective, Valentin Santana, during the inauguration ceremony.

The square features several allegorical murals and is crowned with a quote from the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who once said, “To defend the homeland of Palestine, you must love it.”

The small square is flanked by Palestinian and Venezuelan flags, as well as images of Catholic figures like Jesus of Nazareth and the Virgin Mary, both draped with the Palestinian flag.

The text reads, “This is what keeps me madly in love with Caracas. The strong contrast, the rebellion that is in the air, the politics that captures me in everything I see. I was passing by Urdaneta Avenue, and I had to stop for a second to take this photo. Long live Free Palestine!”

During the event, which took place in a neighborhood near the presidential palace of Miraflores, attendees burned an Israeli flag and listened to speeches by Chavez, who during his 14 years in office was a staunch defender of the Palestinian people.

“This is a very humble but deeply emotional tribute to the people of Palestine, who today are being exterminated by Israeli Zionism, by U.S. imperialism, by European lackeys who are financing the bombs that are killing those children on the soil of Gaza,” said Jorge Navas, another Venezuelan citizen.

According to figures compiled by the Palestinian Health Ministry, the Israeli occupation army has killed at least 40,878 Palestinians in Gaza and injured 94,454 people. The genocide figures could be even higher, as tens of thousands of bodies remain under the rubble of buildings and homes bombed by Zionist forces.
