So far, authorities have released 533 citizens, following the parameters of due process.

On Monday, Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab reported that he has asked the judiciary to review the measures against 179 people prosecuted for the violent events that occurred after the presidential elections on July 28.

These releases occurred between December 10 and 14 and are added to the 354 releases carried out previously. So far, Venezuelan authorities have released 533 people, following the parameters of due process guaranteed by the Constitution.

On July 28, Venezuelans participated in a general election in which President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected for the 2025-2031 term, defeating U.S.-backed opposition politician Edmundo Gonzalez. After this democratic event, however, the Venezuelan far-right forces activated their “Small Commandos”.

Between July 29 and 30, these terrorists attacked 11 metro facilities, 28 buses, 27 patrol cars, 10 police stations, 27 monuments and statues, 57 educational institutions, 10 electoral facilities, and 10 local headquarters of the Unified Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

Linked to the opposition coalition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), the Small Commandos were even involved in the deaths of at least 25 people, among whom were sympathizers of the Bolivian Revolution. As a result of the post-election violence, hundreds of people were prosecuted by the authorities.

“About a thousand people were arrested for throwing stones and bottles at the police, burning trash, and summarily condemning innocent individuals. They are not political prisoners!” Prosecutor Saab said in one of his reports made in August, when he announced that some detainees were sentenced to over two years in prison.

In the following months, the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office conducted 1,104 investigative procedures related to far-right paramilitary organizations. It also determined that the Small Commandos directly affected some 20,000 citizens.

One emblematic case related to far-right violence is the homicide of Jose Torres, a first Sergeant of the Bolivarian National Guard. This 26-year-old officer was killed by violent groups who shot him in the neck on July 29 in a parking lot in Maracay.
