Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office To Summon Gonzalez To Testify on Usurpation of Functions

Before and after the presidential elections on July 28, the far-right politician disobeyed laws and institutions, Saab said.
On Friday, Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced that he will summon former presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez to testify about his responsibility in the publication of a website through which the Venezuelan far-right disseminated fake results regarding the presidential elections of July 28.

“He must appear. We expect him to do so. He should speak consistently about what happened before, during, and after July 28, when he marked several moments of disobedience to our institutions,” Saab asserted, recalling that he has the authority to summon those responsible for crimes against the Venezuelan State.
The investigation involving Gonzalez will be handled by the 58th Prosecutor’s Office, specializing in cybercrime, which will receive support from other institutions to identify servers, users, and other details related to the process of creating unrest among the population and political destabilization.
Saab recalled that the Venezuelan far-right claimed fraud after the July 28 elections, attempted to usurp the electoral authorities, participated in a massive cyberattack, and published false results on an unofficial website.
At the beginning of August, the Prosecutor’s Office announced a criminal investigation against Gonzalez and opposition politician Maria Corina Machado to determine their responsibility in crimes related to the usurpation of functions, the dissemination of false information to cause unrest, incitement to disobedience of the law, incitement to insurrection, association to commit crimes, and conspiracy.
During appearances before the Supreme Justice Court’s Electoral Chamber, which were prompted by the contentious appeal filed by President Nicolas Maduro, the parties that nominated Gonzalez’s candidacy publicly admitted that they did not have the records that allegedly led them to suspect electoral fraud.
Venezuelan Attorney General Saab also emphasized that Gonzalez and other far-right leaders are responsible for the 27 people killed and 129 injured during the violent acts of July 29 and 30.
