On March 18, this research company conducted a nationwide sample survey of 900 people with a margin of error of 3%, asking them: “Do you believe that this measure by the U.S. government against Venezuelans has been promoted and supported by Maria Corina Machado?”
According to Hinterlaces, 84 percent of respondents believe that the far-right politician did promote and support the U.S. policy, 9% said “No,” and 7% either did not know or did not express an opinion.
Dissatisfaction with what happened was also expressed in the streets. On Tuesday, thousands of Venezuelans held a march in Caracas to protest the deportation of over 200 migrants to El Salvador.
U.S. President Donald Trump authorized this measure based on the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, arguing that the deportation aimed to expel alleged members of the Aragua Train, a criminal organization that Venezuelan authorities had already fought and dismantled some time ago in the South American country.
Among the demonstrators were relatives of the migrants, such as Jazmin Ramirez, the aunt of Angelo Escalona, an 18-year-old singer who had been in the U.S. since August 2023. In February, U.S. authorities detained the young Venezuelan while he was recording a music video with a group of friends in his apartment.
She claimed that his detention was essentially a “kidnapping” since her nephew was not committing any crime and had a work permit. On Friday, his family was informed that he would be repatriated, but Angelo Escalona never arrived in Venezuela, leading to suspicions that he is being held in a Salvadoran prison.
Immediately after the implementation of the U.S. policy over the weekend, President Nicolas Maduro demanded immediate access to information regarding the Venezuelan migrants sent to El Salvador, where President Nayib Bukele has offered to imprison migrants deported from the United States.
On Tuesday, the massive march in support of the deported migrants made its way through the streets of Caracas, reaching the National Assembly while carrying signs demanding “justice” and “freedom” for their compatriots detained in El Salvador.
“All our solidarity goes out to the families of the young people who were sent to a concentration camp in El Salvador,” said President Maduro, who promised that his government would do “everything necessary” to rescue the Venezuelan migrants.
