Venezuela’s Government Announces Measures Due High Temperatures and Drought

The government of Venezuela announced that due to high temperatures and extreme drought in the country’s Andean region, a series of measures will be taken in response, urging citizens and the National Public Administration to actively participate in electricity conservation from 24 March.

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reports that, as a result of the climate emergency which has led to the increase in global temperatures, we are facing a climatological event that affects the water level of reservoirs that generate electrical energy in the Andean region,” reads a statement by the Venezuelan government.

In the regard, Temporary adjustments have been made to public sector working hours for six weeks, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, excluding essential services.

In addition, a “1×1” scheme is implemented, alternating working and non-working days and on working days, public employees will devote time to strengthening the communal self-government rooms, consolidating communal circuits as pillars of popular power.

“Similarly, we call on the population to accompany these actions with other effective measures, such as adjusting the temperature of air conditioners to 23°C,” recommend the authorities.

The Bolivarian government also urges citizens to take advantage of natural light and disconnect electronic devices when we are not using them, among others.

According to the Venezuelan authorities, this measures are headed to ensure national life, its normal development, and the development of productive forces and “service for the happiness of our people, at this moment that passes through the entire humanity to mitigate the consequences of global warming.”
