An open threat of bombing against Iran constitutes a shocking affront to the international peace, Baghaei said.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei responded to the threat of bombing his country made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“An open threat of ‘bombing’ by a head of state against Iran constitutes a shocking affront to the very essence of international peace and security,” he said, asserting that Trump’s threat “violates the United Nations Charter and betrays the Safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

“Violence begets violence, peace begets peace. The United States can choose its course… and accept the consequences,” Baghaei stated. Hours earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, declared that if his country is attacked, it will respond to U.S. threats.

“They threaten to commit an evil act. If they commit any evil act, they will receive a reciprocal and strong blow,” Khamenei said in a speech on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the month of Ramadan, at the Mosalla Mosque in Tehran.

On Sunday, Trump threatened Iran with bombings and secondary tariffs if an agreement on its nuclear program is not reached, following Tehran’s rejection last week of direct negotiations with Washington.

“If an agreement is not reached, there will be bombings… Bombings like never seen before,” Trump declared in a phone interview with NBC, in which he hinted that U.S. and Iranian officials were engaged in talks but did not provide further details.

Tehran has expressed willingness to engage in indirect negotiations with Trump, who, in addition to calling for talks, has resumed the so-called “maximum pressure” policy against Iran to cut off Iranian oil sales.

During his first term (2017-2021), Trump withdrew the U.S. from a 2015 agreement signed between Iran and other world powers that imposed strict limits on Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
