Washington Must Remove Cuba From List of State Sponsors of Terrorism: Ramonet

There is not a single valid and reasonable argument to accuse Cuba, the journalist pointed out.

In a letter, Franco-Spanish journalist Ignacio Ramonet demanded that U.S. President Joe Biden remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT).

He urges the U.S. leader to rectify the “profound injustice committed on January 12, 2021, by his predecessor, Donald Trump, who, just weeks before leaving the White House, decided—without any real legal basis—to reinstate Cuba on the infamous SSOT list.”

The Spanish journalist also recalls that President Barack Obama removed the Caribbean country from this disgraceful list in 2015, “which represented a very positive step towards finally forging a more constructive relationship with Havana.”

“For 65 years, despite the tensions that have existed between the United States and Cuba, not a single case of violent action occurring on U.S. soil, sponsored directly or indirectly by Havana, can be cited. Not a single case!” Ramonet said.

“The most atrocious consequences stem from the risks associated with any form of humanitarian aid, business, investment, and trade involving Cuba and, by extension, its citizens. All of this is compounded by the terrible consequences of the cruel and illegal economic, commercial, and financial blockade that your government has maintained against Cuba for over 60 years,” he added.

The Spanish intellectual pointed out that the current wave of Cuban expatriates migrating to the United States, unprecedented in its scale, is perhaps the most illustrative example of the devastating impact and suffering caused by the extreme and brutal measures against the Cuban economy.

“Mr. President, this situation must end. You know there is not a single valid and reasonable argument to accuse Cuba and keep its population under an illegal and inhumane collective punishment,” he said.

“You have the authority, before leaving the White House, to correct this cruel absurdity and remove Cuba from the SSOT list. Do it now!” Ramonet urged, expressing hope that Joe Biden would rise to the occasion of this historic moment.

The Casa de las Americas invited citizens around the world, including writers, artists, cultural promoters, academics, activists, and social advocates, as well as members of NGOs and those sensitive to the daily suffering of the Cuban people, to support “this noble initiative with their signatures.”
