In his swearing-in speech, he highlighted that his oath of office took place under the Constitution written and approved by the people, despite all adversities.
“We are the drafters of a Constitution that was born despite the oligarchs and imperial conspiracies. We have always complied with this Constitution because we wrote it with the people,” Maduro said, emphasizing that the Bolivarian Constitution binds rulers to be accountable to the popular will.
“The power granted to me by the Constitution and these symbols was not given to me by any foreign government or president. The U.S. government or the oligarchy did not make me president,” he declared.
Maduro recalled that on December 15, 2024, his country commemorated 25 years since the enactment of the Bolivarian Constitution, which endowed the Venezuelan republic with a peaceful and democratic character, following the dream of Commander Hugo Chavez.
“In 200 years of republican life, this Constitution is the only one that emerged from a national dialogue and consensus with all the people. It is the only one that was submitted to a referendum so the people could decide whether they agreed with it or not,” the Venezuelan president recalled.
“We are constitutionalists and adhere strictly to our Constitution,” he stated, highlighting that his country has always conducted democratic and transparent electoral processes despite the environment created by the U.S. economic war and its 930 sanctions.
In this regard, Maduro emphasized that three electoral processes mandated by the Constitution will take place in 2025 to ensure Venezuelan governance, peace, and development. One of these processes involves electing new representatives for the National Assembly, who will take office on January 5, 2026.
The Bolivarian leader will also issue a decree to initiate a constitutional reform process to update the 25-year-old Constitution with the participation of the broadest possible range of social sectors.
