Currently, the leftist politician is in preventive detention as a consequence of what appears to be a new lawfare case.
Through a message sent from prison on Wednesday, Daniel Jadue, the mayor of Recoleta, thanked Chileans for their solidarity and urged them to redouble their efforts to achieve a fairer country.

“We must continue to establish the limits of what is possible to prevent the right-wing from destroying everything we have advanced,” said the leftist politician, who is in Capitan Yaber prison as a result of a lawfare process.
On Monday, the Third Guarantee Court of Santiago ordered preventive detention against him, arguing that the Recoleta mayor represented “a danger to society.”
Previously, a prosecutor accused Jadue of alleged crimes of bribery and fraud against the State during purchases made by the Chilean Association of Municipalities with Popular Pharmacies (Achifarp), an organization that the communist politician created in 2016.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, that association and 170 municipalities conducted negotiations for the purchase and sale of supplies and medications at lower prices, which triggered strong criticism from economic and political elites.
Through a statement issued on June 7, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) expressed concern about Jadue’s detention. The 10 member countries of this integration scheme pointed out that Latin America “has been the scene of regrettable cases of the judicialization of politics.”
Therefore, ALBA warned that the “judicial investigation and arrest warrant” against the Recoleta mayor could be another example of political persecution implemented through judicial processes.
“They judge me for transformative management. There is not a peso in my pocket, but they send me to preventive detention,” said the communist leader and demanded that “the Chilean justice act in accordance with the law, the facts, and the truth.”
During the weekend, hundreds of people carried out a caravan towards Capitan Yaber prison to demand Jadue’s release and reject the lawfare against him.
They argue that Jadue’s only mistake was trying to change the logic of the neoliberal system through the creation of popular pharmacies and generating opportunities for people to live with dignity.
