“In Sudan to reiterate WHO’s commitment to alleviate the humanitarian and health challenges faced by millions of people across the country,” said Adhanom in his X account.

“We will continue to work together to address the many health challenges facing the country, such as widespread insecurity, massive displacement of people within and outside the borders of Sudan, floods, famine and disease outbreaks, and ensure that they receive increased levels of international attention, resources and response,” he said.

The Sudanese Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, said in a statement that the visit of Tedros is in support of Sudan and where “aspects of joint coordination and cooperation between them Sudan and WHO” will be addressed.

The minister said that the director of WHO will hold meetings with state leaders, as well as with heads of various UN agencies in the country and field visits to health and reception centres.

This week, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, called for urgent resources and unrestricted access to expand the humanitarian response in the African country, which is mired in a deep crisis of famine, floods, cholera outbreaks and thousands of displaced people.
