Some 570 firefighters with 160 trucks, 6 helicopters and 4 tankers are fighting to contain the flames that have already burned more than 6,400 hectares, according to the European Union’s Earth Observation Programme, Copernicus.
“There is no active front, but scattered spots and today the winds have subsided, although the danger of reviving the flames always lurks,” said a spokesman for the Fire Department.
The fire broke out last Sunday near the town of Rozena, on the north coast of the Peloponnese (southern) peninsula and, fuelled by strong winds, it spread south and east with a front that reached more than 30 kilometres.
Some 13 villages, with more than 2,000 people, had to be evacuated in advance, while several scattered houses around the villages have also been burned.
On Monday, the dense smoke from the fire reached Athens, where it covered the sky and blocked the sun. Authorities found two charred bodies in front of a pen near the village of Elliniko.
