Since late 2024, wildfires have ravaged a total of 48,688 hectares of forests, plantations, grasslands, and homes in various regions of Argentine Patagonia, according to official data released this Tuesday by Greenpeace. The environmental organization holds national and provincial authorities responsible for what it considers a “lack of prevention” in addressing this crisis.

Hernán Giardini, coordinator of Greenpeace’s Forest Campaign in Argentina, stated in remarks that “both the national government and provincial governments have denied or underestimated the climate crisis,” which has worsened the situation. Giardini warned that “ignoring science and cutting the budget allocated to forest protection and wildfire prevention has its consequences.”

The fires have caused devastation in protected areas, consuming 11,661 hectares to date in Nahuel Huapi National Park in Río Negro and 22,131 hectares in Lanín National Park in Neuquén. However, Greenpeace warns that the figures for Lanín could be even more alarming, as no new data has been published in the last three days.

In the tourist town of El Bolsón, Río Negro, 3,825 hectares have been lost to the fires. In Chubut province, an active fire in Trevelin has burned 2,000 hectares, although four fire hotspots have been contained and one more extinguished, resulting in the loss of 8,711 and 90 hectares, respectively.

The situation remains critical and highlights the urgent need to implement effective measures to prevent future environmental disasters in the region.
