Since December of last year, Argentine Patagonia has been facing an unprecedented environmental crisis, with wildfires that have already consumed approximately 37,100 hectares in the provinces of Chubut, Río Negro, and Neuquén.

As firefighters intensify their efforts to combat the flames, adverse weather conditions are complicating the situation, with strong winds and high temperatures fueling the fires.

The fires have affected various localities and two iconic national parks in the region. In Nahuel Huapi National Park, which spans Neuquén and Río Negro, the fire has devastated around 10,200 hectares in critical areas such as Los Manzanos and El Manso.

The town of El Bolsón in Río Negro has also been severely affected, with a fire that has burned 3,612 hectares and caused significant damage to over a hundred homes. Tragically, the death of an 80-year-old man has been reported as a direct result of this catastrophe.

In Chubut, while the fire has been contained in some areas, such as Epuyén where 3,530 hectares were burned and around 70 homes were destroyed, other hotspots remain active. In particular, the rural area of Atilio Viglione is facing a fire that has already consumed 4,396 hectares.

The situation remains critical, and local authorities continue to work to mitigate the devastating effects of these wildfires. The community is coming together in a collective effort to protect their homes and preserve the invaluable natural heritage of Patagonia.
