The California city faces an unprecedented crisis with the spread of wildfires that have left at least two people dead and a “high number” of injured.
On Wednesday, local authorities confirmed that more than 30,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes due to the intensity of the flames and adverse weather conditions.
During a press conference, the chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Anthony Marrone, lamented the loss of life and highlighted the seriousness of the situation. “Unfortunately, we have two civilian deaths reported for unknown causes at this time and a significant number of injuries,” Marrone said.
The fires, which began on Tuesday, are being fueled by the Santa Ana winds, known for their dry nature and ability to fuel fires in southern California. Currently, these winds blow at a force of up to 100 mph in some areas, further complicating containment efforts.
In response to this emergency, California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered the immediate deployment of resources to fight the flames, as well as the mobilization of National Guard reservists. The Los Angeles Fire Department has activated all available resources in an attempt to control the situation.
However, Marrone admitted that the authorities were not prepared for a disaster of such magnitude. “There are not enough firefighters in Los Angeles County to deal with fires of this magnitude,” he said, reflecting the difficult reality facing emergency crews.
With more than 30,000 evacuations in the last 24 hours, the community faces a bleak picture as flames continue to sweep vast swaths of land. The authorities urge citizens to keep informed and follow evacuation directions to ensure their safety.
The situation continues to evolve, and weather conditions are expected to continue to challenge fire-control efforts. The Los Angeles community unites in solidarity as it faces this devastating crisis.
