World Leaders React to Donald Trump’s Electoral Victory

The Republican politician has received messages that emphasize the importance of international cooperation.
In the early hours of Wednesday, Donald Trump declared victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election. Below are the first reactions from some leaders of other countries.

ARGENTINA: President Javier Milei congratulated the Republican candidate on his victory and pledged to support his administration. “Donald Trump, congratulations on your remarkable electoral victory. Now, Make America Great Again. You know you can count on Argentina to move forward with your mission. Success and blessings. Best regards,” wrote the libertarian politician on the social media platform X.
BRAZIL: In his congratulatory message to the Republican politician, President Lula da Silva stressed the importance of preserving favorable conditions for global development.
“My congratulations to President Donald Trump for his electoral victory and his return to the presidency of the United States. Democracy is the voice of the people and must always be respected. The world needs dialogue and joint work to have more peace, development and prosperity. I wish the new government luck and success,” he said.
ESTONIA: Prime Minister Kristen Michal congratulated Trump on his “impressive electoral victory,” emphasizing that Estonia and the United States have always been the closest allies.
“I look forward to working with you to strengthen the transatlantic relationship and ensure that aggressors do not prevail,” he said, referring to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.
President Alar Karis also expressed his hope that Estonia and the United States would continue to strengthen their close cooperation.
LATVIA: Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said that her country’s priority is to continue strengthening transatlantic ties with Trump in the White House.
“We rely on the strong leadership of the United States in the world. The United States is our strategic partner and a strong ally in NATO. Latvia spends more than 3 percent of GDP on defense,” she noted.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed his desire to work with Trump to reinforce bilateral relations and the transatlantic partnership. “Europe needs a strong United States, and the United States needs a strong Europe. Latvia is and will remain a strong and reliable partner of the U.S.,” he stressed.
GERMANY: Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed confidence that Germany and the U.S. would continue their “successful” working relationship to promote international prosperity and freedom.
“Congratulations, Donald Trump, on your election as U.S. President. Germany and the U.S. have a long, successful history of working together to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the benefit of our citizens,” he said.
Upon returning from Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock congratulated Trump, emphasizing that Germany, Europe, and the United States are close partners and allies, with a “transatlantic friendship that has never been based on any single political party.”
“Ukraine is defending our shared freedom more than ever. We will continue to stand firmly by their side as long as they need us. For a just and lasting peace in Europe. This peace will only be possible with Ukrainians, with Europeans, and with the United States,” she stressed.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in his congratulatory message to Trump, highlighted that “transatlantic relations are crucial for the stability and prosperity of our two countries and our continents.”
“The Federal Republic of Germany is deeply indebted to the United States for its support of our freedom, unity, and security,” he emphasized, reminding Trump that “together we are stronger than alone” and “together we can achieve more.”
“Especially in this turbulent world, full of conflicts and uncertainties, our cooperation has immense value and strength, both bilaterally and as partners in NATO and the United Nations,” Steinmeier argued, assuring that the U.S. can count on Germany “as a strong partner.”
JAPAN: Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that he looks forward to collaborating with Donald Trump to strengthen the bilateral security alliance.
“Heartfelt congratulations to Donald Trump. I am truly looking forward to working closely with you to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance and promote a free and open Indo-Pacific,” he said.
His message came after the Japanese government’s spokesperson, Yoshimasa Hayashi, emphasized that the alliance between Tokyo and the U.S. “is the foundation of Japan’s diplomacy and security,” referring to Japan’s foreign policy and the ongoing military alliance established in 1960 that allows U.S. military bases on Japanese soil, along with a mutual defense commitment.
“We will continue our cooperation across various fields and as global partners with a key role in maintaining a free and open international order while strengthening the deterrence capabilities of our alliance,” Hayashi said.
PARAGUAY: President Santiago Peña expressed his conviction that Donald Trump will continue to strengthen cooperation to benefit the South American country. “Congratulations, Donald Trump, on being elected as the new President of the United States. Democracy has once again demonstrated its strength! Paraguay and the United States share deep democratic values, and I am confident we will continue strengthening our cooperation for the benefit of our nations,” he said.
POLAND: Prime Minister Donald Tusk congratulated the Republican candidate on his election victory and advocated for continued cooperation for mutual benefit.
“Congratulations to Donald Trump for winning the election. I hope, we will continue our cooperation for the good of the American and Polish nations,” wrote the liberal politician on X.
Meanwhile, Polish President Andrzej Duda wrote on the same platform, “Congratulations, President Trump! You did it!”
PORTUGAL: Prime Minister Luis Montenegro advocated for maintaining close collaboration with Trump’s incoming administration. “Congratulations, President Donald Trump. I am committed to working closely together under the spirit of the longstanding, solid relationship between Portugal and the United States, both bilaterally, within NATO, and multilaterally,” he said.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated the Republican politician, noting that “Portugal was the first neutral country to recognize the independence of the United States,” the importance of the Portuguese community in the U.S., and the cooperation they shared during Trump’s first term.
“The President of the Republic congratulates President-elect Donald Trump, wishing him success in his new term, in strengthening the transatlantic relationship, democracy, and human rights, as well as in building sustainable peace and progress,” the Portuguese Presidency wrote.
