The Electoral Court of Uruguay held an extraordinary session on Wednesday in which it officially proclaimed Yamandú Orsi as the new president of the country, along with Carolina Cosse as vice president.

This formal act took place ten days after the second round of the presidential elections, where the opposition formula of the Frente Amplio obtained 1,212,833 of the 2,436,780 votes cast, surpassing that of the ruling Partido Nacional represented by Álvaro Delgado by a difference of 93,296 votes.

During the ceremony, the president of the Electoral Court, Wilfredo Penco, handed a copy of the proclamation to Orsi and Cosse, marking a milestone in the country’s recent political history.

In his speech, Orsi highlighted the importance of the electoral process and the rigor that characterizes the Uruguayan democratic system. “This is a time when someone may think that there are many ways, and I say that in this case, the way is the content itself,” said the president-elect, who will take office on March 1.

Orsi also recalled advice received from a foreign leader regarding the singularity of the election figures in Uruguay, stressing that “there is never a problem or suspicion.” He highlighted the work of those involved in electoral institutions, stating that “there is a structure and people working to ensure everything proceeds with the rigor we all deserve.”

Carolina Cosse expressed her emotions during the ceremony and thanked the Electoral Court for its work over the years. “We will know how to fulfill and honor the best democracy in Uruguay,” concluded the elected vice president, who also demonstrated her commitment to the democratic values that have characterized the country.

The Orsi-Cosse formula won in the second round of elections held on November 24, and the change of command ceremony is expected to take place on March 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a new five-year term of government.

With this proclamation, Uruguay is taking another step toward strengthening its democracy and committing itself to a future based on dialogue and institutional respect.
