“This is a country of political parties, of alternation in power, of agreements, a country where trust remains a central element for its functioning. That is why we say that Uruguay works,” Orsi stated, who thanked his predecessors in office.
Orsi, the third leftist leader in the history of Uruguay and political heir to former president José Mujica, recalled that on a day like today, 40 years ago, the country regained democracy after living through “the most painful period” of its history, “marked by political persecution and human cruelty as a method of government and by economic plunder as a central part of that political project.”
“There are remnants of that period that continue to this day. That is why it is as just as it is essential to maintain intact the commitment to freedom, truth, and justice,” declared Orsi, who returns the Broad Front to power after five years of government under the conservative Luis Lacalle Pou.
“On a day like today, but exactly 40 years ago, Uruguay was regaining its democracy. Since then, we have witnessed the longest period of democratic life in our country’s history. It is a great pride to be able to celebrate not only in front of my own compatriots, but also in front of leaders from different parts of the world”, he emphasized.
In the same line, he noted that in South American country “there are still sequels of that period that continue to this day” and added that it is therefore essential “to keep intact the commitment to freedom, truth and justice”.
“During these four decades, every five years, the citizens have elected their rulers in a civic festival that makes the Republic proud. This is a country of political parties, alternation in power, agreements. A country in which trust remains central to its functioning,” he said.
And he added: “Thank you democracy, thank you Republic, thank you political parties for making Uruguay a plural amalgam of coexistence that still arouses wonder in the world”.
In another moment of a speech that was applauded at several times, Orsi remarked that he arrives to the Presidency “with the same conviction and vocation of service as always”.
