Milanovic’s victory, the candidate of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) and nine smaller left and center parties, is the most decisive achieved in a presidential election since Croatia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
“Thank you,” Milanovic wrote on his Facebook account in his first official reaction after the announcement of the first partial voting results.
His conservative rival, a medical professional and former Minister of Education, supported by the HDZ party in government, also sent a “thank you” to his supporters through social media.
Croatian media emphasize that after the heavy defeat in the second round, Dragan Primorac gave a speech at the electoral headquarters, accompanied by Prime Minister and head of the HDZ party, Andrej Plenković, and at no point did he congratulate his winning rival, Milanović.
The Prime Minister also has denied to congratulated the new president of the nation after his convincing victory. Instead, he highlighted the worth of his party’s candidate: “Primorac was a great candidate. Unlike Milanović, he had a program. Primorac presented his, Milanović presented nothing,” he stated to the press.
The election day proceeded normally and without concerning incidents. More than 3.76 million Croats were called to vote for their president for the 2025-2030 term. It is noteworthy that the Croatian electoral commission accredited at least 14,600 national and foreign observers to participate in the elections.
