"You go to the United States where they pick money on trees," Larry Itliong said to a class at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1976. "Did that happen? Hell, no!"FANHS
Immigrant farmworkers often worked for less than a dime per hour. Larry Itliong had barely been in the U.S. for a year before becoming involved in the labor unrest of 1930 when more than 100 Filipino & Mexican farm workers were arrested for union organizing in Imperial Valley, California.Public Domain

Larry Itliong formed a close relationship with Cesar Chavez. The two farmworker representatives, with their respective communities as their base, charted a new path in U.S. labor organizing during the historic Grape Strike of 1965.teleSUR

In August 1966, Bill Kircher, National Director of Organizing for the AFL-CIO, negotiated a merger between AWOC and the NFWA that was named the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee AFL-CIO (UFWOC). Sadly, the romantic tales of the UFW's labor actions and protests soon left little room for the Delano Manongs. Itliong left the union in 1971, despite being begged to stick with the UFW by fellow union militant, Gilbert Padilla.YouTube / Delano Manongs
For a long time, Itliong's name was only known to labor historians and students of ethnic studies, but in 2015, the State of California designated Oct. 25 "Larry Itliong Day." Alvarado Middle School in Union City, Calif., where this mural is displayed, was renamed Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School. The school has a 30 percent Filipino-American demographic, according to a school counselor.IVCMS
