A private jet plane crashed in a remote mountain region in northern Mexico claiming the lives of all 13 passengers, including a family of five that were flying back from Las Vegas, authorities and local media said on Monday.
Mexico’s civil aviation authority said in a statement the aircraft departed Nevada shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time. Nearly two hours later, air control in the Mexican city of Monterrey lost track of the jet and was unable to make contact with the aircraft. According to reports, the pilots tried to avoid a storm in the area.
The nationalities of the victims are not yet clear but the surnames of the three crew and 10 passengers published by the Coahuila government were all Hispanic and ranging in ages from 19 to 57 years old.
The victims were flying back after attending a boxing match between Mexican boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and U.S. fighter Daniel Jacobs on Saturday. Alvarez tweeted that “he deeply laments the terrible accident” and that his “prayers are with their families.”
On Monday, an air search located the downed plane in a remote area in the municipality of Ocampo, photos showed the charred remains of the aircraft and the crash site. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.
