After a two-year suspension for corruption, Guatemala's soccer team is to begin competing in international championships again, FIFA officials announced Thursday.

Per the mutual agreement between FIFA and state officials, following the inauguration of the Regularizing Committee of the National Football Federation of Guatemala (CDAG), FIFA lifted the 19-month sanction.

CDAG President Juan Carlos Rios tweeted: "Thank you very much to all the fans who suffered and who waited for the National Team... This shows that FIFA has confidence in this committee."

The Guatemalan team was prohibited from international games October 2016 after the National Government Assembly refused to submit to FIFA's Fiscal Regularization Committee. The veto followed a corruption scandal involving former president of the Executive Committee of Fedefut, Brayan Jimenez, and Hector Trujillo, former magistrate of the Constitutional Court (CC).

Though the FIFA sanction has now been lifted, Prensa Libre reports that the country must await a ruling from both Central America and the Caribbean Football (Concacaf) and Central American Football Union (Uncaf) before rejoining international soccer.
