King Abdullah II of Jordan has told senior adviser to the president of the United States, Jared Kushner, that the only solution to peace in the Middle East is with the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as capital.
"His Majesty stressed the need for a comprehensive and lasting peace based on a two-state solution, leading to an independent Palestinian state on 4 June 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital," a palace statement said and added that there is some concern regarding the secrecy of the United States's "deal of the century" Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.
Palestine has rejected any plan stating it is likely biased against them, citing the U.S.'s unpopular recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, moving its embassy from the city to Tel Aviv, closing Palestinian diplomatic offices in Washington and ending aid to United Nations agencies that fund education and health programs for Palestinian refugees.
Kushner is currently leading the U.S. delegation in the region where he is gearing up to present the first part of a U.S. President Donald Trump-sanctioned peace solution.
Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard released a statement Wednesday saying the only solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was "withdrawal of Zionists from the occupied lands and return of Palestinian refugees to hold free elections."
Jason Greenblatt, Trump's special representative for international negotiations, and Brian Hook, the special U.S. representative for Iran are among the Kushner-led party slated to visit Morocco, Jordan and Israel this week. Greenblatt and Kushner met with Morocco's King Mohammed VI Tuesday but officials have remained mum on the topic of discussion.
Protesters held demonstrations, near the Amman U.S. embassy, against the peace plan with signs, some with the slogans "No to the deal of the century," and "Go back home Kushner."
The meeting with King Abdullah comes ahead of a so-called "Peace for Prosperity" conference from June 25-26, in Bahrain, which is expected to be attended by governments leaders, civil society and the business sector representatives.
"Attempts at promoting an economic normalization of the Israeli occupation of Palestine will be rejected," Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said responding to reports that Washington is angling for "potential economic investments and initiatives" to overlook the ongoing Israeli occupation.
Palestine has declared that they would not attend the Manama, Bahrain event and Jordan, a U.S. ally, has not yet committed.
