Philadelphia Limousine Association and two other taxi associations have released a statement threatening to boycott July's Democratic National Convention if measures aren't taken to deal with unregulated ride services such as Lyft and UberX.
The drivers are also calling on Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney to take some other steps to curb the unregulated operations of UberX and Lyft. Kenney has said previously that the matter does not fall within his jurisdiction.
Lyft and UberX are services that allow users to call drivers who often operate outside of regulations and unions.
The PLA represents not only limousine drivers, but also Uber Black drivers, a part of the ride app's luxury service.
The Philadelphia Business Journal quoted Ali Razak of the PLA as saying "the potential DNC boycott would include roughly 500 UberBlack drivers – based on the group's interactions on their messaging app – and then several hundred more taxi operators".
A lack of limousines and other luxury vehicles would presumably hinder transportation opportunities for high-level party officials.
